Detail analysis of thriller clip analysed in class

The thriller clip we analysed was Collateral.

Use of camera work.

The camera works effectively in introducing the characters. As audience, we see how tom cruise is focused shallowly, as opposed to the other character Jason Statham , which is introduced as a normal individual, even though they are both dressed formally. This shows the status of the two characters, with tom cruise being the one we focus on. In the first 38seconds, we see a total of 10 shots varying from an over the shoulder shot to a close up of Tom cruise’s face.

The switch of bags during the end leaves the audience questioning, ‘What is happening?’ as Jason Statham does this intentionally.

Use of sound

During the opening scene, there is no sound used at all except for diagetic sound. This enforces more realism, making us believe this is how everyday life is at the airport.

Skills, Audit and Editing

In todays lesson we were all taught to use a software called 'Film Cut Pro.'
This helped us make a title sequence. We looked at many clips and chose some and put it on a timeline which helped us build up on it.

How is suspence created in the film you watched in class?

''A near masterpiece,'' according to the New York magazine, No Country for old men has been established as an excellent masterpiece, created from the Coen Brothers. Violence, immense suspense and hostility consisted in all aspects of the film.

The film constantly left the audience on the edge of the seat, as well as lulling them into a false of sense of security many times. Realism was enforced when drugs and money was the centre of violence. From the film, I chose key examples which included great suspense through the use of mise en scene, setting and camera shots.

At the beginning we see a man who starts to move whilst cuffed by an officer. We then observe the police officer turns his back on the man and sits down at the telephone.

Unsure of what he is doing, the convict then gets up, and quietly stands behind the officer who is still on the phone. As audience, we are uneasy and tensed, as we don't know what is going to happen. This is an example of suspense as the viewers are left reeling about what is going to happen.

The convict then chokes the officer to death by getting out of the handcuffs. Because of the violence and atrocity, we are let shocked. This is because the killing of an officer is not usual to us.

In another scene, we see how an innocent man is killed because of money. Non diegetic sound is used so therfore this enforces realism. This makes us tensed because it is as if it is happening in real life as a real life setting is shown which included a motel.

Suspence

Suspense is a feeling of uncertainty and anxiety about the outcome of certain actions. Alfred Hitchcock is a prime example, where he used stuffed props, camera and sound to emphasise suspence. Suspence is key in media contexts as it helps reel in consumers and in most cases leaving them question what is going to happen. This is also done through the use of cliffhanger. Suspence is also explained as a feeling of growing tension and excitement.

Suspense

Suspense is when something is building up and keeps the audience thinking and asking questions about what is happening or what is going to happen next. It makes the audience want more and keeps them engaged to the film as they want to know the next step of what is going to be done. This creates tension in the viewer and makes them have double thoughts and many doubts during the film. For example who the killer may be, or what is going to happen to him now? [Maybe this might happen or maybe even that?] It builds up tension with incertainity of what will happen or is happening with anxiety. It is like a false plateau as it makes the viewer think different things and turns out to be another.

It makes you feel tensed and excited as you have many thoughts if what it could be. It gets you thinking and more persuaded to watch the whole film as the viewer feels they have to know the result and see if their conclusion was right.

People would go to watch a film with suspense as it would be more interesting and makes you build up with the film. It makes the film more attractive as it keeps you tensed.

Suspense

The definition of suspense is a feeling that builds up inside you and it is useful for giving the audience a feeling of anxiety and uncertainty.
Suspense makes me feel gripped and it make me want to carry on watching the film further to see what happens next.
It attracts the audience because it makes them want to watch the film more. I would go to see a film with suspense because it is an exiting and it builds up tension.
To create suspense, you need to build it up. This can be done by a lead up to a big event or a dramatic moment.
